11. Typical Weather at the Ridge

Hurricane Ridge is named for the intense hurricane force winds that sweep across the exposed high alpine area.  Especially in winter, winds can blow 40 to 60 mph with wind gusts up to 110 mph during strong winter storms. Along with these winds, the ridge receives an average of 30 to 40 feet of snow, with a record of 62 feet in the winter of 1998/1999! Temperatures can vary between below freezing in the winter to above 90 degrees during summer heat waves.Be prepared for changing weather conditions all year long. Keep in mind that some winter snow could linger into July. During the summer months, be ready for bright sun and exposure with sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water. Extra layers and a rain jacket are usually a good idea even in the summer. Check weather forecasts before your trip and come ready for rain or shine, wind and cold, or hot and dry. The Visitor Center will have the latest weather conditions, so stop in Port Angeles before you head up.
