53. Tides and Weather

If you are planning to venture farther than a mile or two along the coast, keep in mind that several points are only passable at lower tides.  Always carry a tide chart, available at visitor centers and coastal ranger stations. DO NOT GUESS! Know when the tides will occur and plan your hike accordingly to avoid being trapped.  Detailed topographic maps are highly recommended for backpackers and are available at any visitor center.  Strong winds or storms can significantly elevate tides and create hazardous conditions. Be attentive to your surroundings and never underestimate the power of the Pacific Ocean.  The weather is extremely variable and visitors should come prepared for a wide range of conditions.  Rain gear and layered clothing are essential and forecasts and current conditions are available at park visitor centers or through the National Weather Service.
