562. Ozette Triangle

A 9.1 mile loop, the Ozette triangle ranks as one of the most popular day hikes and backpacking destinations in Olympic National Park. Taking the clockwise direction, you’ll follow elevated boardwalk through mysterious cedar bogs and open prairie to Sand Point, a beautiful crescent of sand and surf. Walking north along the coast, keep an eye out for the ancient petroglyphs at Wedding Rocks created by the Makah people. When you reach Cape Alava, the westernmost point in the contiguous US, the path heads inland for the shade of the coastal forest and additional boardwalk. Huckleberry bushes, skunk cabbage, forest wildflowers and an incredible diversity of fungi can be spotted as you make it back to the trailhead. Backpackers may stay the night at Cape Alava or Sand Point but must have an advance reservation and an animal resistant food container or bear can.
