12. Hiking Hurricane Ridge

Explore the high subalpine ecosystem of Olympic National Park by taking a hike at Hurricane Ridge.  There are trails for everyone, from quick strolls through meadows of wildflowers in the summer to longer hikes into the backcountry.  There are maps at the main trail heads and at the Visitor Center.   Short walks start from the parking lot at Hurricane Ridge.  You can wander along the Meadow Loop and Cirque Rim trails and take in views looking north, if the weather is clear.  You can combine these trails to go anywhere from a city block to about 1.5 miles.  For those looking for longer hikes, you can continue from the High Ridge trail out toward Klahanne Ridge and Mount Angeles then back to Hurricane Ridge.  One of the most popular day hikes is the Hurricane Hill trail, about 3 miles round trip and climbing 700 feet to a high point with 360 degree views in clear weather.  The trailhead is at the end of the road, just over a mile past the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center.  Overflow parking is available at Picnic Area B.  Another option for longer hikes is to drive the narrow, gravel Obstruction Point road and hike along the high alpine ridges or into Grand Valley.  Several other trails descend into nearby valleys from Hurricane Ridge.  Ask a ranger for more detailed information about hiking in the Olympic Mountains.
